Abdominal cramps? Bloating? Gas? Diarrhea or Constipation? If you suffer from these discomforts you may have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a common digestive disorder. IBS symptoms usually first occur before the age of 35, and more women than men have IBS. And while the exact cause of IBS is unknown, checking for food allergies and sensitivities can be helpful in treating IBS, and often patients find relief in avoiding certain trigger foods. Now researchers in Norway have also found a link between IBS and Vitamin B6 deficiency.

The study suggests that increasing the daily consumption of vitamin B6 can help IBS. Vitamin B6 can be found in whole grains, watermelon, spinach, broccoli, bananas, acorn squash, avocados, poultry, and fish. Also, it should be mentioned that often patients with IBS don’t digest grains very well since they can be hard to digest. So while whole grains contain B vitamins, if you react negatively to them, just get your B vitamins from another source.

Some interesting comments they make on the preface of the book:

“In our opinion, the medical establishment became enamored with high-tech, high-powered solutions to many of the health problems facing us today and lost sight of the fact that more gentle, less toxic alternatives were available.”

“…serious health problems are related to changes in our lifestyles and environment. We do not eat healthy food, we do not get enough exercise, and we are exposed to pollutants and toxins that did not exist in our grandparents’ time. We live longer, but not healthier.”

“… nutritional supplements and herbal medicines …. can provide us with the healthy components of foods in quantities that might be difficult or impossible to get through diet alone. They also provide those natural agents that, when ingested at higher levels, exert therapeutic action with fewer side effects than more powerful, synthetic drugs.”

As you’ve often heard me say, the best way to combat infection is to boost your body’s OWN defenses. Excessive reliance on antibiotics to combat infections eventually leads to an immune system that isn’t properly “prepped” for antibiotic-resistant invaders.

Also good supplementation (herbs, minerals and vitamins) is needed… and as you know, at Fluid Water Therapy we carry only medical-grade, excipient free supplements for you.

The sun: a good friend to see moderately!

With this beautiful summer, we all want to find a good spot to sunbathing ! But there are various questions about the sun : On one hand, it helps vitamin D synthesis but on the other hand, it promotes skin cancers. So is it a friend or not?

Like always, there is not a clear-cut answer to this question. We need the sun but we should respect some simple rules to avoid health problems: We have to be balanced in our approach.

      Sun and vitamin D synthesis.

Vitamin D was discovered when scientists led researches about rickets. It is a disease of growing bone specific to children and adolescents due to deficiency or impaired metabolism of vitamin D.

Also called calciferol, vitamin D is both a vitamin and a prohormone; it is vital for the health of bones and teeth, as it plays an essential role in the metabolism of calcium in the body. In fact, no matter how much calcium is consumed in the diet or through supplements, it is only absorbed with sufficient quantities of vitamin D. Vitamin D regulates the level of calcium in the blood by improving calcium absorption in the intestine while at the same time minimizing the elimination of calcium in the urine. It also plays a part in mineralizing and demineralizing bones of calcium, depending on the needs of the body.

As we have just seen, vitamin D deficiency results in rickets when we are young. During adulthood, symptoms are quite different because growth period is over : bone pain, deformation and sometimes severely broken bones may happen.

So, it is very important for all of us to get enough vitamin D ; if not, our body will suffer damages that could have lifelong after-effects.

Vitamin D is a special vitamin because there are two different ways to get it : exogenous and endogenous sources.

Exogenous ones means vitamin D from food. During normal digestion, we can absorb vitamin D. This ability decreases with certain intestinal diseases such as inflammatory ones.

Some examples of vitamin D-rich food are fish livers such as cod liver, fish (salmon, sardines,) and egg yolk. There is a small amount of vitamin D in butter.

However, food provides only 20% of our vitamin D: the major source is endogenous: Our body can synthesize vitamin D from cholesterol by sunlight. So, we need the sun and its UV-B rays to provide us the vitamin D we need to live and to be healthy. A minimal solar exposure is necessary.

There are no official recommendations about how long we should have sun exposure: it depends on where we happen to live, season, time of the day and skin’s natural pigmentation.

It seems that we need only a 15 minutes sun exposure everyday (and at least 3 times a week).

      Sun and skin cancer

We all need sun to synthesize vitamin D but we have to be careful because exposure to solar radiation is related to the risk of developing serious medical conditions such as skin cancers and particularly melanoma.

Certain rules should be observed to protect yourself and your family from developing such a serious disease:

    ·	Avoid sun exposure between 11 am and 4 pm.

    ·	Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses

    ·	Generously apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, even on cloudy days.

These simple rules are for everybody. However, we have to be very careful with children because some studies have shown that the risk of melanoma increases with sun exposure during childhood and incidence of sunburn.

Melanoma can be aggressive and a poor prognosis.

Do not forget to see a dermatologist regularly so that he can check if everything is fine. Skin cancer screening is very important especially if you are at risk.

As a conclusion we can say that sun is like a friend but we should not see him too many times! Be aware!

Colonic hydrotherapy is a type of colon cleanse that forces low-pressures streams of water into the colon to flush out the intestinal tract and encourage better overall health. They are usually performed by a licensed professional and can be uncomfortable, but provides benefits in the end. For best results, a colonic should be performed at least once a month, depending on lifestyle. Home colon flushes using herbal pills or an enema can be used in between visits.

“Colon hydrotherapy is the perfect specific procedure to eliminate constipation and restore normal bowel function. My approach to medical practice is to balance the GI tract using stool testing. I find various pathologies relating to bacteria, yeast, parasites, and other organisms of this nature. A lot of disease comes from imbalances in the colon, as manifested by inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, autoimmune diseases, allergies, multiple sclerosis, and certainly constipation. Such imbalances can be corrected by means of colon hydrotherapy, herbal supplements, and diet,” says Dr. Paul Flashner. “There is no question about the huge difference a health professional can bring to the patient by utilizing colon hydrotherapy plus other complementary and alternative methods of healing.”

      Definition of Colonic Irrigation System

A colonic irrigation system as defined by the Code of Federal Regulations, Sections 876.5210 & 876.5220, is a device intended to instill water into the colon through a nozzle inserted into the rectum to cleanse (evacuate) the contents of the lower colon. The system is designed to allow evacuation of the contents of the colon during the administration of the colonic irrigation. The device consists of a container for fluid connected to the nozzle via tubing and includes a system which enables the pressure, temperature, or flow of water through the nozzle to be controlled. The device may include a console-type toilet and necessary fittings to allow the device to be connected to water and sewer pipes. The device may use electrical power to heat the water. The device does not include the enema kit.

Open vs. Closed Class II Systems

Fluid Water Therapy uses ONLY Class II Open Systems such as the one that appears below as most clients prefer the comfort and cleansing experience it provides. Open systems utilize gentle, gravity-fed water rather than the pressurized water.

An example of a Class II Closed System appears on the right. Conventional closed systems require a therapist to insert a speculum into the client’s rectum and then attach a disposable hose. A pressurized stream of water is then delivered through the attached hose. When the colon is filled & pressure reaches maximum levels the therapist manually drains the colon back through the hose. Please note that Fluid Water Therapy does NOT utilize closed systems.

This far into the story, you’ve either been traumatized and have clicked away, or you are intrigued to know everything. If it’s the latter, get ready:

We’re about to walk you through every step involved in getting a colonic at NYC’s Fluid Water Therapy.

Here it goes: When a client walks into the clinic, they start by filling out a health form (on an iPad, of course) to make sure they qualify for the therapy. “After we qualify the patient by going over their intake form, we proceed to explain our system and how it works,” says naturopathic doctor and owner of Fluid Water Therapy, Francis Gonzalez. “Our systems are FDA registered, and everything used is sterilized and disposable.” The facility’s water is purified by a six-stage carbon filtration system and two bacteria-zapping ultraviolet lights. When it enters your body, it’s somewhere between 99 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit.

Next, an employee gives you a few instructions and exits the room. Then, it’s game time. You hop onto the machine and

insert “a pencil thin, sterilized, disposable lubricated rectal nozzle” an inch or so into your tush.

You cover yourself with a cloth, page the technician, and they return to get your session started.

“Once the therapy starts, the client feels warm water filling up their intestine,” Gonzalez explains. “Within seconds the patient will feel like they need to have a bowel movement. At this point, we instruct them to release (push) just as they would when using their own bathroom at home.

” (The whole time, you can see what’s coming out of you in the reflection of a mirror in front of you.) “After the session has ended, the client stays seated in the system for about five to 10 minutes emptying any residual water,” Gonzalez continues. Then, you are free to

Apparently, people have been secretly cleaning out their colons for millennia. “What many people don’t know is that

, but according to Calapai, that’s no coincidence. “Back in 2000, Katie Couric had an on-air colonoscopy after her husband died, and that was when everyone started to become more aware of their colons and afraid if they weren’t cleaned out, they too would get cancer,” he says.

Colonics have made a comeback over the past year or two, and there’s a reason for that, as well. “The natural health industry has seen a massive surge in interest, and

Here’s where there’s some controversy. According to Calapai,

traditional doctors recommend colonics for “severe constipation and to clear the colon for a clearer view before colonoscopy

.” Beyond that, there isn’t much research behind the wellness benefits of colonics. “In fact, because there is such limited research doctors don’t advise them,” says Calapai. “The body has the liver and kidneys to do the job of eliminating harmful substances or toxins from the body.”

Calapai also says more studies need to be done to provide hard data on any side effects or benefits. “It’s a difficult thing to study because the colon has trillions of bacteria and altering them could present other health issues,” he says.

“At this point, scientists don’t know enough and err on the side of not disrupting the bacteria in the colon.”

According to Liz, colon hydrotherapy is not recommended for those with certain health conditions including Crohn’s disease, heart disease, or hemorrhoids (to name a few). It’s not recommended to

The Angel of Water Surround ® Colon Hydrotherapy System is a very simple, safe, comfortable, and hygienic way to irrigate the colon for endoscopic, radiological, or other medical purposes. The following sequence of events briefly describes the colon irrigation procedure.

The tank is filled with hot and cold water controlled by a water mixing valve on the basin right topside. The proper temperature of the water falls between 99 -103 degrees Fahrenheit and is monitored by the temperature gauge visible on the front of the tower cabinet. If at any time the water rises above 103 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature sensor will trigger the flow valve to shut off, stopping water flow to the client.

After the client has comfortably positioned himself on the basin (with the pillow and cushioned backrest in place) and inserted the nozzle into the rectum, water flow can be activated by turning ON the FLOW switch. Water flow can be stopped at any time by simply turning the FLOW switch OFF. The tank line to the basin nipple has a backflow prevention valve as a permanent plumbing safety feature. It is located underneath the fiberglass basin and is connected directly to the basin nipple through an opening in the basin wall. It prevents water from flowing back into the line once it has passed through the basin nipple into the nozzle and into the client’s rectum.

The System utilizes the controlled pressure created by gravity as water exits the elevated tank in the tower cabinet as activated by the FLOW switch. The procedure can be stopped at any time by simply turning off the FLOW switch to stop the gravity-fed stream of water or by the person simply sliding back off the nozzle and resting on the basin.

A typical colon hydrotherapy session lasts approximately 30-40 minutes and uses approximately 10 gallons of water, which is the total volume capacity of the main tank. Usually, only one tank full of water is needed. At the end of the session, all three switches (U.V., CYCLE, FLOW) are turned OFF and the client slides back off the nozzle so that it naturally drops away from his body.

The client can now drain comfortably on the ergonomic basin, sitting up erect or leaning back in a lounge position to fully drain her colon. After this is done, the client can rinse himself using the personal shower sprayer and its control valve located on the basin left topside. Tempered water is delivered to the sprayer by the same water mixing valve on the right topside of the basin that also sends water to the System tank. The client can then towel herself dry before dressing and leaving the privacy of the colon irrigation room.
